Skaftafell

Skaftafell National Park is located at the roots of Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe and is  a part of Vatnajökull National Park. Within Skaftafell some of Iceland’s greatest natural treasures can be found, including Svartifoss (“the Black Waterfall”). It is a rare oasis for flora, surrounded by sands and lakes. Skaftafell is renowned for good weather, in large part because Öræfajökull provides excellent cover for the park.

Öræfajökull is a part of Vatnajökull and its tallest peak is Hvannadalshnjúkur which happens to be the tallest peak in Iceland, reaching about 2.110 meters. The whole area has been shaped by natural forces, volcanic eruptions, glaciers and lakes which make the park very unique and beautiful.

The park is open to the public but certain rules are in place to ensure the park’s preservation. We recommend those interested in visiting Skaftafell to make themselves familiar with the rules before visiting. This applies especially to those planning to drive within the area.
